Solar Rebates and Incentives in South Australia (2026 Guide)

South Australians can access a hand full of rebates to make installing solar panels and batteries much more affordable.

The main programs available are the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (STCs) and the Cheaper Home Battery Program. When combined cut the upfront cost of a solar system and battery by about 30%. But it doesnt stop there.

Local state incentives include feed-in tariffs, Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) and interest-free loans. South Australian homeowners are sitting pretty for saving money on solar energy.

The federal solar rebate (officially the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme) is managed by the Clean Energy Regulator and applied automatically by installers, so there is no actual ‘rebate’ as discounts are already applied to advertised prices.

STCs are assigned to every eligible solar PV system based on system size and location. In this case, South Australia is Zone 3.

How much is it?

Each certificate represents one megawatt-hour of expected electricity your panels will generate before 2030. In 2025, this translates to roughly $350–$400 per kW of installed capacity. For a 6.6kW system, that’s about $2,155 off the upfront cost.

Solar Rebates by System Size South Australia Battery System $3,720 $1,630 $3,720 $1,950 $3,720 $2,310 $3,720 $3,270 5kW 6kW 7kW 10kW

The above chart shows the separate rebates for your solar system and battery in SA.

You don’t actually claim the rebate yourself. Your installer handles this and deducts their market value from your invoice.

The rebate applies to new rooftop solar systems in Adelaide and across South Australia, provided they’re under 100 kW and use Clean Energy Council-approved equipment.

Solar incentives available in South Australia

Below are the details for the three federal rebates to all SA residents. Further down the page, you will find more incentives on the state level in South Australia.

1. Federal small-scale renewable energy scheme (STCs)

This is the cornerstone of all solar rebates in Australia. All you need to know is it reduces upfront costs and shortens payback times. If you want to know the ins and outs of how it actually works, check our breakdown on STC creation.

2. Cheaper home battery program

The Cheaper Home Battery Program was introduced on July 1st 2025, and helps South Australians add battery storage to new or existing solar systems. There is a rebate of up to $3,720 available.

As always, you’ll need to use approved installers and CEC-approved batteries, such as popular Sonnen and Tesla battery packs.

3. Feed-in tariffs (FiTs)

Feed-in tariffs are where your utility company like AGL or other pay you for excess solar energy exported to the grid. What they pay per KW is much less than what they charge you to buy it back at night, but it makes sense, peak time is in the evening.

To get around this, locals either oversize their system to compensate or just add a battery.

Think of the FiT like using the grid as a virtual battery. It’s not perfect and you wont cut your bill by 100%, but it’s pretty good and saves you the extra outlay of a battery.

How to claim a solar rebate in South Australia

For the federal STC solar rebate program, there’s no application form or anything that needs filling out. Your installer handles everything and you get the discount upfront. Get quotes from accredited solar installers. (We can help you with this here)

  1. Choose your system size and equipment.
  2. Sign the installation agreement and pay the discounted price.
  3. Installer creates and trades STCs to recover the rebate value.
  4. System is connected to the SA Power Networks grid.

For other programs like the Sustainability Incentives Scheme or REPS, you’ll apply directly through the provider after installation. Click the links to go directly to official application forms.

Keep your invoice, certificate of electrical compliance, and STC assignment form as proof for future audits.
Rebate Phasing Out by 2030 2023 2024 2025 2026 2027 2028 2029 2030

The Federal Solar Rebate is set to be phased out by 2030. It is unclear if local state rebates will continue beyond this point.

Who’s eligible for solar rebates in South Australia

To qualify for solar rebates and battery incentives in SA it’s pretty straightforward. Your system must be:

  1. Installed by an SAA-accredited installer or a CEC Approved Retailer
  2. System capacity under 100kW with approved panels and inverters
  3. Located within Australia and connected to the grid or used for on-site power

Additional programs and local incentives

The South Australian Government has its own incentives for installing solar, which can be stacked with the rebates outlined above.

Retailer energy productivity scheme (REPS)

The REPS program is a South Australian Government initiative that makes utility companies fund household and business efficiency upgrades. You can access these freebies like LED lighting, hot-water systems and energy audits. It’s pretty awesome to be fair and it pairs well with solar to reduce total energy use and lower electricity bills.

Sustainability incentives scheme (City of Adelaide)

Homeowners and businesses within the City of Adelaide can claim an extra 10% rebates for solar panels, battery storage, and EV chargers. Wild stuff! Applications are submitted via the council website with proof of installation and payment. Go here to apply.

Virtual Power Plants - SA VPP

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) connect thousands of SA battery systems into one shared network that supports the grid and rewards participants. The main reward is a lower electricity rate, set at 25% lower than the regulated Default Market Offer (DMO).

Some of the major VPPs in South Australia include:

  • Tesla Energy Plan
  • SonnenConnect
  • AGL’s Solar Exchange

I’m personally not a huge fan of VPP programs. They can increase your overall solar savings, but at what cost.

The constant filling and draining of your battery will significantly reduce its lifespan, so any savings you do make will need to go towards a replacement battery.

Interest-free and green loans

Several banks and energy retailers offer green loans or interest-free finance to help you cover any remaining upfront cost of your solar system and or battery.

This allows you to get a solar system with no money down and begin enjoying savings.

The best part is that the savings cover the repayments with money to spare!

Example green loan

System size: 6.6 kW solar system
Cost: $7,003 (after rebates).
Green Loan: The green loan terms are over 5 years at 0 % interest, repaying around $25 a week.
Typical savings on a 6.6kW system: Roughly $30–$35 a week on power bills.
ROI: This means the system pays for itself as it’s being repaid with net savings of about $250–$500 a year even during the loan term.

Combining rebates, tariffs and loans for maximum savings

Stacking programs can dramatically reduce the cost of your solar and battery setup.

Below is an example for a 6.6 kW solar system plus a 10 kWh battery:

System Cost $8,799
Battery Cost $10,500
System Rebate (-$1,796)
Battery Rebate (-$3,720)
Net system cost $13,783

Yearly savings with feed-in tariffs is typically $1,500. Adding a REPS upgrade or council rebate can cut another 5–10 % off the final price.

The future of solar incentives in South Australia

Federal STC values will decline slightly each year until 2030, but South Australia continues to expand local energy programs. The state is investing in community batteries, smart export limits, and Virtual Power Plants to support the transition to 100 % renewables.

The South Australian Government plans to link future rebates to actual energy performance, rewarding households that export clean energy at optimal times.

That means owning a solar and battery system today is not just a cost saving — it’s future-proofing your home for the next generation of energy markets.

FAQs

How much can I save with the solar rebate in South Australia?

Most homes save about 30 % off the upfront price — roughly $350–$400 per kW of installed capacity.

Yes. The Cheaper Home Battery Program and VPP offers provide up to $3,720 for eligible battery systems.

No, the Cheaper Solar Battery Rebates are to incentivise new customers to get a battery, so they will not give you the rebate in retrospect.

Absolutely. You receive the STC rebate upfront and then earn ongoing credits for excess solar energy exported to the grid.

Only property owners can claim the rebate, but renters benefit indirectly through lower electricity bills.

STCs phase out gradually, but South Australia is expected to maintain VPP and energy-efficiency incentives well into the 2030s.
